Men's Physique

Men's Physique 〰️

About this category

Physique competitors are lean, fit and muscular, yet do not have the muscle mass or extreme leanness required for the Bodybuilding category. They are characterised by having a small waist, broad shoulders, and a remarkable abdominal area.

Tanning, grooming, suit choice, posing, stage walk, and overall aesthetic appeal are also taken into consideration as judges look for the best overall package.

Athletes wear conventional board shorts cut ABOVE the knee.  11″ inseam (28cm) or slightly shorter is allowable.  Athletes wearing board shorts at mid thigh length may be scored down.

Competitors are judged in two 2 rounds. Please see segments below for details.

  • Judges are looking for:

✔️ Nicely shaped and balanced muscle throughout

    ✔️ A small waist

    ✔️ Good V-taper

    ✔️ Abdominal definition

    ✔️ Defined calves

    Note:

Even though upper legs are covered by the board shorts, this section of the legs is still taken into account as part of the athlete’s overall aesthetics. Make sure that the board shorts you pick enhance your physique.

    Round 1 - Symmetry & Muscle Tone

This round encompasses overall muscle balance as well as conditioning.

    4 Mandatory poses as executed.

See posing for this round in the ‘Mandatory Poses’ tab below.

    Round 2 - Stage Presentation

The overall appearance of the athlete is judged. Stage presentation, tanning, hair, grooming, and suit selection.

See posing for this round in the ‘Mandatory Poses’ tab below.

  • Judges will score each round and give competitors a final placement for that round before moving on to the next round.

For example, if there are 8 people in the class the judging panel will place athletes 1st thru 8th in each round. When judging is complete both scores (2) will be added together to come up with the final placement for each competitor in that class.

Please note that only the top 3 athletes for each class get awarded. Only the top 5 will be provided with their placings.

  • We have recently introduced a new section on our website titled 'Poses,' showcasing the mandatory quarter turns and poses essential for our shows 🤩. Check it out HERE

The information below outlines competitor’s poses for each round.

    Round 1 - Symmetry

Athletes will execute 4 quarter turns at the discretion of the Head Judge.

    1.Front Pose

Competitors will face the judges. Feet must remain parallel but some lateral positioning of the toes is acceptable. Hands may be held at the sides momentarily to display symmetry, but this should not look like a bodybuilding front relaxed pose. Over flexed posing and clinching of the fists is not preferred.

    2.Side Poses

Competitors hips must face the side of the stage and heads should be turned toward the judges. Shoulders may be turned as much as 35 degrees toward the judges in order to accentuate their V-taper.

One arm shall hand down and the other hand shall be placed on the hip.

Feet shall be staggered, and the back calf tightened.

    3.Back Pose

Competitors will face the back of the stage. Feet must remain parallel with allowable later positioning of the toes.

Lats should be spread to display V-taper. Hands may be held at the sides momentarily but then transition to one hand on the hip.

At times, the Head Judge may ask competitors to switch hands if that facilitates the judging process.

    Please note:

Physique athletes shall have one hand on their hip on all quarter turns to differentiate Men’s Physique from Bodybuilding. The head judge will remind competitors to place one hand on the hip if needed.

    Round 2 - Stage Presentation

Athletes will be asked to perform an I-Walk. See graphic below.

✔️ The I-Walk is the competitor’s opportunity to show grace, poise and confidence.

✔️ The I-Walk will consist of a front pose at the rear centre of the stage and a walk to the front.

The competitor will then present their front, preferred side, and back pose plus any other poses/transitions of their choice and exit through the right side of the stage (the same way they entered)

✔️ In this round the athlete can perform WNBF Men’s Physique approved poses of their choice or simply perform each one of the mandatory quarter turn poses.

✔️ The I-Walk will be done to music selected by WNBF Australia.

✔️ Poses should not be held for more than 3 seconds each.

✔️ 35 seconds is the maximum time allocated for the I-Walk

✔️ Competitors should execute the I-walk in a tasteful, confident manner. Over exaggerated posing or performance outside Men’s Physique category (Bodybuilding poses, gymnastic moves, etc.) will be scored down.
